Allopathic Medicine (Allopathy) E-mail
Written by Jeff Behar, MS, MBA

Allopathic medicine and allopathy (from Greek ἄλλος, állos, other, different + πάϑος, páthos, suffering) are terms coined by alternative medicineSamuel Hahnemann, the founder of homeopathy to describe the traditional western medicine approach to medicine: working to relieve disease symptoms rather than attack disease causes. Generally, allopathic medicine refers to "the broad category of medical practice that is sometimes called Western medicine, biomedicine, scientific medicine, or modern medicine"

Allopathic Medicine and Allopathy Modern Definition

Webster’s dictionary defines allopathic as, “relating to or being a system of medicine that aims to combat disease by using remedies (as drugs or surgery) which produce effects that are different from or incompatible with those of the disease being treated”.

In general, allopathic medicine treats illness with drugs that will reverse the symptom a patient is experiencing. For example, if a patient has a headache, medications are used to stop the headache pain.

Allopathic medicine and allopathy are often terms for regular medicine in a context of traditional medicine such as Ayurveda, as well as in a context of complementary and alternative medicine such as homeopathy However, many aspects of traditional medicine systems such as Traditional Chinese medicine or Ayurveda are allopathic in that they act by working to abate patients symptoms.

Allopathic medicine, or allopathy, is the most common approach to medical treatment across the world, although alternative approaches are increasing in popularity.

Allopathic Medicine Critics

Critics to this approach believe that allopathic medicine does not address the cause of an illness and by this nature does not serve a patient's best interest since the cause of the illness is not being addressed. Alllopathic critics further believe that allopathic medicine serves to line the pockets of big pharmaceutical companies who stand to gain from a medical approach that masks a person’s health issues so that they continue to come back and purchase more of their product, rather than cure the illness.
